Lyme Disease Awareness Month: How to Stay Tick-Safe in the UK

Learn how to prevent Lyme disease in the UK this May during Lyme Disease Awareness Month. Spot the signs, know what to do after a tick bite, and stay protected with incognito®.

What Is Lyme Disease?

Lyme disease is a bacterial infection caused by Borrelia burgdorferi, transmitted via the bite of an infected tick. If not caught early, it can lead to serious health issues, including joint pain, nerve damage, and memory problems.

Why It Matters in the UK

Ticks are increasingly found across the UK, not just in rural areas but also in urban parks and gardens. High-risk areas include:

  • The Lake District
  • New Forest
  • South Downs
  • Scottish Highlands
  • Richmond Park and Epping Forest in London

Anyone spending time outdoors — hikers, dog walkers, families — can be at risk.

How to Spot Lyme Disease

Watch out for:

  • A bullseye-shaped rash (but note: not everyone gets this)
  • Flu-like symptoms: fatigue, fever, muscle aches
  • In advanced stages: nerve pain, facial palsy, or memory issues

Tip: Take a photo of any unusual rash to show your GP.

What To Do If You’re Bitten

  1. Remove the tick promptly using fine tweezers (avoid squeezing).
  2. Clean the area with antiseptic or soap and water.
  3. Monitor for symptoms over the next few weeks.
  4. Contact your GP if you feel unwell or notice a rash.

Preventing Tick Bites: Your Best Defence

The most effective way to avoid Lyme disease is to prevent tick bites in the first place:

  • Cover arms and legs when in grassy or wooded areas.
  • Stick to paths — don’t brush against foliage.
  • Apply incognito® insect repellent, proven to protect against ticks.
(DEET-free, clinically tested, and safe for all the family.)
  • After time outdoors, check skin, scalp, and pets for ticks.

Remember the T.I.C.K. Check

Use this easy-to-remember guide every time you head outdoors:

TThink Ticks
Before you leave the house, remember you could be heading into a tick-prone area — whether that’s countryside, woodland, or even your local park.

IInsect Repellent
Pack and apply incognito® insect repellent before and during your time outside.
Our award-winning spray, roll-on and sunblock are all clinically tested to be 100% effective against ticks.

CCover Up
Wear loose clothing to cover as much bare skin as possible, and apply repellent to any exposed areas.
After your outing, check your whole body (including behind the ears!) — and check your pets too.

KKeep to Paths
Stick to marked trails when walking or hiking. If you need to stray off track, tuck trousers into your socks for added protection.
