Spotlight on Africa

Earlier this year, I spent about 16 weeks volunteering in Uganda with a charitable organization called Spotlight on Africa. Based in Mbale, eastern Uganda, Spotlight is an incredible organization that works to tackle poverty, build opportunity, and bring sustainable change through programs in health, water, education, and economic empowerment. So far, Spotlight has drilled 37 boreholes providing clean drinking water for dozens of communities, has built a general health clinic, a maternity health centre, 2 primary schools, 2 vocational skills training centres, an ICT centre, and is currently building a new secondary school. Every day, I am blown away by the work this organisation does and the impact they make in people’s lives, and I would strongly encourage anyone reading this to visit their website to learn more: https://www.spotlightonafrica.co.uk

While there, I had the enormous privilege of being able to work in different departments throughout the organization – teaching at one of the primary schools, conducting field work monitoring the progress of different programs, writing reports, planting trees, and getting involved in fundraising. During this time, I was guided by some of the most inspiring, compassionate, and generous people I have ever met, a team who whole-heartedly welcomed me into their organization and community, and from whom I learned so much. I will always be immensely grateful to Spotlight on Africa for this amazing experience, and I look forward to staying in touch and working together again in the future.

incognito® Mosquito Repellent

Despite Mbale being a high-risk area for malaria, I was able to protect myself fully by taking the preventive medication Malarone and using incognito® mosquito repellent. Both medication and mosquito repellent are essential for staying completely safe. I would apply the spray usually three times a day, once in the morning when I woke up, then again in the afternoon, and then also in the evening, depending on whether I was outdoors or not. There’s no need to wear it at night when you’re under a mosquito net. I also used other protective incognito® products such as the hair and body wash, deodorant, and sunscreen

I found that the spray provided complete protection against mosquitos for about 6 hours after applying it. incognito® is great because it is made entirely from natural ingredients and does not contain harsh chemicals. As a result, it had absolutely no adverse effect on my skin, despite wearing it all the time. It also dries quickly after applying and doesn’t cause discomfort. During my time in Uganda, I was very rarely bitten, and if I was, this was always due to occasionally forgetting to apply the spray again after 6 hours. Overall, I would strongly recommend the use of incognito® mosquito repellent as an essential accompaniment to Malarone for staying completely safe when visiting areas that are affected by malaria.
